Checking basic requirements

Before signing up, make sure you meet Uber’s minimum requirements:

  • Meet the minimum age to drive in your city

  • Have a valid driver’s license

  • Have at least one year of driving experience (or as required locally)

  • Pass a background check

Vehicle requirements 

Your car must meet Uber’s vehicle requirements, which vary by city:

  • 4 doors

  • Good condition (no major damage)

  • Meets the minimum year requirement

  • Up-to-date registration and insurance

Create your Uber driver account and upload the required documents:

  • Driver’s license

  • Vehicle registration

  • Proof of insurance

  • Profile photo

Complete the Background Check

  • Uber will run a background check, which usually takes a few days. You’ll be notified in the app once you’re approved and ready to drive.

Once approved

  • If you’ve never taken an Uber ride yourself, book at least 2–3 trips as a passenger before you start driving. Pay attention to what you like and don’t like about the experience, such as:

  • How the driver greets you

  • The cleanliness and comfort of the car

  • Music volume and conversation style

  • Driving habits and navigation

Set up the Uber Driver app

  • Download the Uber Driver app and get familiar with:

  • Going online and offline

  • Accepting and declining rides

  • Using GPS navigation

  • Tracking earnings

  • A clean and comfortable car goes a long way toward earning 5-star ratings:

  • Wash and vacuum regularly

  • Keep the interior clutter-free

  • Have phone charger for your phone

  • Have a Phone Holder ready
